Gunslinger (US) Wins VRMark Challenge Contest

Just a few days ago we came to the conclusion of the VRMark Challenge on OC-ESPORTS. The contest was won by US Overclocker Gunslinger who was joined on the podium by fellow Americans jpmboy and Menthol who finished second and third respectively. Right now, we’re going to take a peek at the scores and submissions from both stages of the contest in a little detail.

VRMark Challenge: January 28th to February 28th 2017

The VRMark Challenge contest consisted of two separate stages, each based around elements of the VRMark benchmark suite from Futuremark. Stage 1 involved the Orange Room benchmark that is designed to assess if a PC meets the recommended hardware requirements for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift VR technologies. It’s not the most demanding benchmark, and certainly way less demanding than Blue Room benchmark used in Stage 2.

The Blue Room benchmark uses a huge 5K rendering resolution coupled with spectacular volumetric lighting effects, all of which makes it one of the most demanding 3D benchmarks on the market today.

In terms of hardware limitations and rules for the contest, it was all very simple. Overclockers were allowed to use any processor (or indeed any number of processors) with any single GPU. What could be easier? In terms of possible tiebreaker situations, the Overclocker with the highest Blue Room score wins.

Stage 1: VRMark Orange Room

As we noted above the Orange Room benchmark is largely designed to assess system performance of a wide variety of potential VR machine builds, assessing the potential performance of systems of varying budgets. As such it tends to be sensitive to both CPU and GPU performance deltas.
In first place we have our eventual winner Gunslinger who marched to to the peak of the table with a score of 17,539 marks. This score was achieved using an Intel Core i7 6950X 'Broadwell-E' chip pushed under LN2 to 5,200MHz (+73.33%) joined by an Nvidia Titan X Pascal card with the GPU pushed to 1,766MHz (+24.63%) and graphics memory at 1,364MHz (+9.03%).
Here’s a shot of the rig used by Gunslinger which is based around an ASUS Rampage V Extreme motherboard:

Runner Up spot in Stage 1 belongs to meankeys (US) with a score of 16,234 marks. Meankeys also opted for an i7 6950X which he pushed to 5,000MHz (+66.67%), plus a Titan X Pascal with the GPU at 1,741MHz (22.87%). Third place goes to Menthol (US) with a score of 15,953 marks using a Core i7 6950X at 4,700MHz (+56.67%) and a Titan X Pascal chip at 1,756MHz (+23.92).

It’s interesting to note that all three of the top scores noted above are in fact the the top three VRMark Orange Room scores ever.

The winning score from Gunslinger is in fact a World Record, with jpmboy and Menthol collecting silver and gold.

Here’s the Stage 1 table at the end of the contest:
